The Last Harvest:
A History and Tribute to the Life and Work of the Farmworkers
on Lake Apopka
A Statewide Travel Exhibition presented by Crealdé
School of Art,
the Farmworker Association of Florida, and Seminole Community College
In the fall of 1997, Crealdé School of Art in
Winter Park entered an educational partnership with Orange County Community
Affairs to offer a series of on-going visual arts classes to the south Apopka
neighborhood. The basic photo class was attended by a dozen young students
in their teens and early twenties. After instruction in the technical and
artistic fundamentals of photography the participants were exposed to the
history and story-telling power of documentary photography.
Earlier in 1998, the above class merged with a collaborative documentary
project started six months earlier, which has come to be known as The
Last Harvest: A History and Tribute to the Life and Work of the Farmworkers
on Lake Apopka. Maitland photographer Faith Amon, with a grant from
Seminole Community College, joined efforts with documentary photographer
and Crealdé Executive Director Peter Schreyer. Parallel to their
photographic efforts, area historians and anthropologists have also been
conducting interviews and background research on the fifty-year presence
of the agricultural industry.
Since its inception the Last Harvest project has evolved
to become an effort not only to document the community that will be affected
by the closure of the farms, but also to actively involve that same community
in its documentation. The resulting photographs and captions provide a window
to the history and heritage of an entire area, revealing its contributing
role in the greater Central Florida community. Through the young image-makers'
photographs, our broader population has the opportunity to explore the little-known
aspects of life and work on the shores of the Lake Apopka agricultural area.
Following the award of major grant funding from the
Florida Humanities Council, the images and words of The Last Harvest project
have been formalized into a gallery exhibition now traveling throughout
the state of Florida. Last November the Last Harvest project was
awarded the Best Arts Collaboration of 1999 by United Arts of Central
Florida. For more information on the travel schedule, please contact the
institutions listed on the right.
