Program for middle school children entitled What Heritage Means to Me

The program of 16 field trips to the Hannibal Square Heritage Center will be made available to middle school
students from Central Florida Public Schools. Each group of 25
students will participate in a guided tour and discussion of the Heritage
Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories from West Winter Park,
facilitated by a senior citizen docent and resident of the community. Each
child will verbalize thoughts about their favorite stories and photographs.
This experience will be followed by a workshop facilitated by a member of
Crealdé’s professional teaching staff. Students will create a piece of art
reflecting What Heritage Means to Me, incorporating the experience of
touring the Heritage Center, as well as their personal experience of family,
home, community, country, and even native country.
-
Mr. Imagination
community Memory Wall.
In March of 2008, Mr. Imagination, an internationally
collected and exhibited Pennsylvania-based folk artist, worked with groups
of children and seniors and Winter Park community members to create The
Hannibal Square Memory Wall, a permanent outdoor sculpture located in
front of the Heritage Center. The concrete wall contains Mr. Imagination’s
characteristic hands, face, and angels, as well as mementos that reflect the
participants’ cultural heritage, personal history and neighborhood pride.
-
In partnership with the University of
Central Florida’s Heritage Alliance program, the Heritage Center will be
able to use technological resources and student interns for educational
programs that involve folklore, heritage, and digital media.
Mission Statement for the Hannibal Square
Heritage Center
In partnership with the community and the City
of Winter Park, Crealdé School of Art operates the Heritage Center as a tribute
to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African American
community. Through innovative programming in the arts and humanities, The
Heritage Center is a neighborhood focal point, archive, and home to the
Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park.
Through exhibitions and diverse educational programs it inspires all Central
Floridians and visitors to our area to become more aware of, respect, explore,
and participate in their own community’s history and heritage.
