Artist's Statement
"Ever since I can remember, I have perceived the experience of life and that
of history (i.e. the story of life in general) as parallel developments of
elliptical form--in opposition to straight timelines-- somewhat like the orbit
of the planets. But both life and history are determined by time, and time is a
text that must be interpreted, even though periodically part of that text is
missing (palimpsest).
One of the ways through which the complexities
of life and its different realities can be understood is through art.
Fortunately, art has no unyielding rules; at times the artist is compelled to
change or make them up as he or she goes along. Materials may have symbolic
meaning; a given word or phrase may conjure up a long forgotten experience; an
image or an object may express a traumatic or euphoric event; and even a
specific smell or color may transport the spectator into a different time or
place in life.
Most art is autobiographical in nature, whether
we realize it or not. A short time ago, in a museum, I saw a Native American
marriage dress; it produced in my mind a cascade of images and stories from my
childhood related to my family's arrrival in this country. This was pure
synesthesia at its best." |
