Artist Statement

Make something out of nothing. A silk purse from a sows ear... I have always loved that challenge. With every handful of clay the gauntlet is tossed down and I must create a pot that compels people to touch, hold and use. I hand build or wheel throw a stoneware vessel and then see to what limits I can take it by stretching, paddling, carving or compressing while the clay is very plastic. I then embellish the pot with textures from found objects, kitchen tools, fabric, tree bark, moss, or leaves creating a surface that begs to be touched. Sometimes there is the playful addition of a whimsical creature ornamenting a knob or a handle that evokes a smile or a chuckle from the user.

Patterns, colors and contrasts found in nature, like the mottled greens and blacks of moss, the crystalline surprise of a geode inside the quiet rock or the gnarly twists of a weathered stick inspire my choices for the final surface decoration but the kiln firing adds the finishing touches. Will it be a gift or a gaff?
