Cultural Tour of New Mexico, Land
of Enchantment
October 17 through 23, 2010 Spend a beautiful fall week in northern New Mexico, one of America’s most unique and enchanting regions. Nowhere is there a more unique and diverse landscape in scenery, people, history and culture. Practice your photographic skills by exploring the rich tri-cultural heritage of this region. Travel in a small group along historic back roads, visit small towns and get to know the ancient and contemporary places of America’s native people. Together with Hispanic and Anglo settlers, they have preserved New Mexico’s “Land of Enchantment.” The tour is custom designed for photographers of levels, as well as individuals interested in art, history and cultural heritage. Tentative Tour Itinerary Sunday, October 17: Midday assembly of group at Albuquerque Airport. Afternoon drive along the historic “Turquoise Trail” with visits to several former “ghost towns.” Overnight accommodations for two nights at the Victorian Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, a beautiful, over one hundred year old, historic hotel. Monday, October 18: Morning exploration of the historic New Mexican city of Las Vegas. Located on the famed Santa Fe Trail, the city has the highest concentration of registered historic buildings (over 900!) and districts in the state. Afternoon hiking visit to Fort Union National Monument, highlighting the ruins of an extensive supply fort established in 1851 to protect the wagon trails going West. A special night photography session will be featured in the evening. Tuesday, October 19: Travel across the beautiful Sangre de Christo Mountains, through the culturally interesting Mora Valley, to the town of Taos. Stops will include the picturesque mill on the historic Salman Ranch and the much photographed and painted Ranchos de Taos Mission Church. Check in for one night at the Best Western Kachina Lodge, located within walking distance to the historic town plaza. Wednesday, October 20: Early morning visit to the 800-year-old Taos Pueblo, America’s most beautiful Native American village and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Free time for lunch, shopping and gallery visits in the towns Plaza area. Early afternoon departure for the mountain “High Road” with visits to several ancient Spanish villages and mission churches. Group dinner at the classic Rancho de Chimayo Restaurant, located in a century-old adobe home. Evening check-in for two nights at Garrett’s Desert Inn in Santa Fe, located two blocks from the famous Plaza. Thursday, October 21: Early morning walking tour of Santa Fe followed by free time to visit the famous Indian Market, world-class museums and art galleries. Optional afternoon excursion to nearby Bandelier National Park with its dramatic canyon and pre-Columbian cliff dwellings. Friday, October 22: Morning departure for Acoma Pueblo. “The Sky City” is one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the United States; one of the tour’s photographic highlights! Afternoon discovery of interesting stretches of historic Route 66, the famous “Mother Road.” Accommodations for our last night are at the Best Western Rio Grande Inn. Farewell party and dinner highlighted with a spectacular cable car ride to the surrounding Sandia Mountains. Saturday, October 23: Morning visit to Albuquerque’s Old Town area, followed by a transfer to the airport. End of guided tour. Please arrange for a return flight after 2:00 p.m.
