Learn to center, open, and compress clay and throw small cylinders on the potter’s wheel. Trimming, finishing, adding handles, feet, and spouts makes pieces ready to glaze and fire.

TD172 Handbuilding Like the Ancients

Over 10,000 years ago humans started using clay to create. Jugs, bowls, baskets, platters, teapots, jewelry, tablets, statues, tiles, buildings―these have all been born from clay, a legacy of civilization. Use traditional coil, pinch and slab techniques to continue that legacy, creating vessels which harken back to ancient times. Suitable for all levels.

TD174 Handbuilding w/Found Objects

This class will use the basic handbuilding techniques of coil, pinch and slab to create ceramic vessels that evoke visual memories through the use of found objects. We will give new life to objects as they inspire form, texture and glazing choices in items for everyday use.

TD129 Bronze Casting
Instructor: David Cumbie                                          Spring
Studio 6 & Foundry; Friday, 12 noon–2:00 p.m.
An introduction to creating small bronze sculptures. You will create small waxes and learn the basics in the art of lost wax casting techniques. Each student will be given five pounds of bronze and will be responsible for finishing their own art work. Students pay $30 for each extra pound cast.

TD134 Introduction to Welding

Design and create small sculptures in steel, then cut out the designs using a torch and plasma cutter. Basic arc welding techniques will be used for assemblage. Materials will be supplied.

Learn fabrication methods to design and create wearable jewelry in copper, brass, and silver. Processes include filigree, stone setting, soldering, filing, embossing, coloring, and polishing.

TD177 Traditions in Textile

Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon HC

Study old textile techniques developed in Asia; traditional stitch (used on Chinese costume making) will be taught to create modern design. Hand spinning will give participants a chance to make unique thread samples. Learn how Korean wrapping cloth is made. Triple stitch and traditional starching will be explained. Basic sewing skills needed.

TD178 Paper Making

Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon Studio 1B

Learn the basics of papermaking: make pulp from recycled paper with onionskins, rose petals, clover, sewing scraps, etc. Mold and deckle will be used to make unique paper. Collage and basic bookbinding will be taught. Make your own book or cards and envelopes. No experience is required; just imagination and a creative mind.

Work with a live model and explore the fundamentals of creating a clay head beginning with basic proportions. All work will be fired at the end of the workshop. WKT10

March 5, 6, & 7: Majolica Pottery
with Jane Skinner, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Studio 4

A pottery technique of hand-painting colored stains onto a white glaze so the colors fuse into the surface when fired, Majolica produces a colorful work of art. Learn glazes and stains, recipes, brushwork and wax resist techniques. Bring your own terra cotta bisque, or purchase tiles. WKT11

Bring small objects for mold-making and create latex molds for casting. Explore traditional and new casting methods; many materials for reproducing artwork will be introduced. WKT13

April 11: Introduction to Mold Making

Learn various methods of making molds with alginate, plaster and Fleximold wax. Prepare molds for casting hands, faces and feet. Copies from molds will be cast in stone. Materials included. WKT14

Students create their own handbuilt, low-fired large clay sculptures with guidance from Miller. Instruction includes engineering and surface finishing techniques. Develop and practice freedom in your sculpture construction. WKT6
